Before beginning the challenge, you'll need to get your hands on a few things first. Here are my suggestions, although you're free to come up with comparable substitutions.

Books

The Alternate-Day Diet

The Alternate-Day Diet is a revolutionary eating plan based on the animal studies documenting alternateday calorie restriction, which indicate that limiting caloric intake every other day can turn on the “skinny” gene (SIRT1). Applying this same model in humans, Dr. Johnson discovered that a similar cascade of positive effects occurs —reduced inflammation, lower free-radical stress, improved insulin resistance, and better cellular energy production, among others. Most important, it also promotes fat loss by releasing fat cells from around the body’s organs.

But, perhaps, the most significant benefit for those who want to lose weight is that every-other-day calorie restriction eliminates feelings of chronic deprivation—the reason that most diets fail.

Easy-to-follow and scientifically sound, the diet is already a worldwide Internet phenomenon. And this book will provide Dr. Johnson’s legion of followers—plus those new to the diet— with all the guidance and recipes they will need to make the diet work best.


Meal Replacements

I recommend using only shakes for the first two weeks worth of "down days." After that, you can switch up between the other meal replacement options, like bars. Keep in mind, the other meal replacements have more calories--which will mean less meals per day in order to stay at 500 calories. The shakes are between 90 and 100 calories, so with the shakes, you will have 5 meals per day.

The shake boxes have 7 packets in it, which is equal to 7 meals. So 5 meals per day X 7 days = 35 meals. You will need 5 boxes of shakes for the first two weeks. I recommend the vanilla flavor, but chocolate is great too! There are some other great flavors too, so test the waters to find out which one is best for you. For the last 10 weeks or so, you will need between 20 and 25 boxes of meal replacements (it will vary depending on how many calories the items you choose are).

A couple years ago I discovered DietDirect.com. Their prices are great and I love that with each of the products you get to see customer reviews before making a decision with new items. Besides the shakes and bars, some of my personal favorite meal replacements from them are the entrees such as Spicy Cheese 'n Pasta. Be careful though, read the labels before ordering.
